What do I want..................?

An ideal university:

Admission:

A fair admission process is imperative for a university to be successful. The admissions office needs to have a curriculum that all potential applicants should meet: An increase of percentage of out of state, in state students, and international should be accepted every year. A minimum of a 3.5 GPA is required to enter a university. Applicants should have taken a minimum of 3 IB/AP courses, in addition to completing four years of a language of their interest. Applicants should be well-rounded and unique. Every potential student of a university should be interviewed.

Majors/Courses

As freshmen they should be able to enroll in classes relevant to their interest without having to follow strict general education requirements. Once students explore, they need to meet with their academic advisor and find out the majors that would appeal to their interest. Lectures should be split into discussion and application of knowledge and the other half should be dedicated to the teaching of the subject. Professors should be required to work closely with each student to assure that they comprehend the material taught. Students should be able to conduct research on their own and integrate their knowledge during class time with other classmates. Each professor‘s priority should be creating an effective learning environment instead of over assigning students with work. Every student should be required to study a language of their interest and become fluent at it; this opportunity would enable them to appreciate other cultures and communicate to other people in the world without difficulties.
Who I am and what I need?
I expect a university to integrate students and faculty who want to make a positive effective influence in the world. I want to be able to know my professors well and gain as much knowledge as I can. I want to be able to work with students from other colleges to create a creative learning environment. As well as interacting with different mentalities, nationalities, and communities to develop a challenging learning environment.

One of my favorite classes is English, every class I attended I become more mesmerized by my professor’s teaching style. Although it’s a short class, I walk out with a new piece of information. Her excitement and passion for what she teaches has made me more open minded in respect to the material she presents in class. Having the opportunity to explore into topics of our interest has stimulated me as a student and in fact made more passionate. What I respect about this professor, is, she respects each of the student’s opinion and takes it into consideration.

My other favorite class is Spanish. This semester my professor gave more encouragement to learn more about the language. She teaches and has discussions in class which allowed me as a student of the Spanish language to discover more details about each material presented.

An ideal university should encompass all of the above to make it an expectional experience for the students and faculty.

Business..Parody... Religion

The visual and textual rhetoric of these shirts are unbelievingly disrespectful and humiliating to those who greatly practice the Christian religion as well as those of other strong faiths. Both shirts elicit the same reaction from me. The designers of both of these shirts, wanted to appeal to the religious community, clearly to gain business from them. The designers didn’t not take one important factor into consideration when creating the different ideas of the shirts; religious Christians will be intolerant of parody. As a religious Muslim, I perceive these images a parody because as Paul Mitchell said, “In the end Christianity is not a brand-it’s a relationship whose depth can’t be reduced to slogans.”
Paul Mitchell said, “Christian sloganeering-which is of course, not restricted to the fashion world-has become too similar to the world’s omnipresent advertising slogans. Consequently, it has diminished its ability to grab people’s attention.” This is not true because different fashion companies that are integrating religious symbols and figures have been successful in the sense of propagating their designs to younger religious groups. This is proven by the robust sales of the Teenage Millionaire, the Los Angeles-based makers of the “Jesus is My Homeboy” which sold 10 million up from 2 million three years ago.
If the shirts only contained text, this would have a different impact to the consumers but not to the intolerant groups of parody. To most of the consumers, text may not be sufficient to represent their faith publically; therefore a visual would further demonstrate their ideology of their religion. On the other hand, we have seen as religious consumers that the mainstream culture has made a mockery of these shirts; in addition, it has become more acceptable.
The rhetorical message of the Jesus in both shirts is clearly disrespecting and Jesus has been thought of an ordinary figure not a religious figure that serves as a role model to many religious communities. In the center, the shirt displays Jesus as a “Home Boy” and advocating peace. The positioning of him is not revealed in a religious way but in a street-like manner. The color of the shirt is plain; there is clearly an emphasis on the text and visual which allegedly implies the “phenomenon” of the Jesus to the targeted consumers. The designer draws “Jesus” face in a non-purely way which gives off a sign of disrespect. The shirt to the left, Jesus was given the holy face, but he was wearing a black shirt and not religious attire which is shocking and brings to us as religious individuals that the designers are directly attacking the Christian faith. The positioning of Jesus is ironically holy, which means the designer was trying to integrate some methods of religion to garner as many consumers as he can. The designers played with the fonts to emphasize certain ideas and grab the attention of the consumer. The usages of different color schemes implicate the importance of the message.

Violence from Video Games....

The America’s Army website has designed it’s websites in a way that captures the attention of the searcher. The home page is very professionally put together which would make it easier for the searcher to acquire the information needed in a timely manner. The heading of each topic is in bold or italic which implies the importance of it. The Heroes displayed gives the website more credibility; these pictures of the heroes are included to inspire young adults and teens to gain fame, success, and productivity.
The intended audience is teens above the age of thirteen. The website is credible in respect to the information provided. On the other hand, the games are manipulating; some give only the positive ideology of war and others reveal the aggressiveness. I don’t agree with Navy veteran Boyle, “that this website/game indoctrinates the ideology of war.” These games are not ideal in terms of credibility. Young teens are not at level of maturity to differentiate between the truth and the fabricated; therefore they are easily influenced in thinking the way the game programmers want them to visualize.
The media controverts the websites ideology of war. In most credible news channels, they reveal the validity of the events in addition to both sides of the story, which helps the viewer to take a stance, but the websites shows aspects of war that may only appeal to one kind of gender, race, ethnicity and nationality.

Are steroids the key to success?

I absolutely disagree with the video participants on the notion that steroids can be used responsibly. “Using anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) increases the risk of specific types of musculoskeletal injuries,” According to an unprecedented survey of retired National Football League players. The surveys containing a wide range of health questions were sent out to retired players and results show, “Steroid users had higher rates of neck "stinger" or "burner" injuries; herniated spinal disks; elbow injuries; injuries to the knee ligaments and menisci; and injuries of the ankle, foot, and toes.” Evidently, retired players are facing the consequences at an older age after they have accomplished their ultimate physical appearance.

All 50 states should mandate a steroid testing program for a random selection of local high school athletes. This process will allow schools, governments, agencies, and health care to find permanent solutions to ban steroid usage that is generating negative career and health effects. There shouldn’t be different standards for professional athletes vs. high school athletes, due to the harmful intentions from the provider to the recipient. The results that came from some of the state’s high schools athlete steroid programs were not critical, therefore according to local news, “Some state lawmakers are wondering if the 6-million dollars spent on the testing is worth it.” This will become an advantage to athletes and drug companies, and a disadvantage to potential laws banning steroids from society.

I think that usage of steroid use is an expected manifestation our culture demands to be the best rather than merely do our best. Competition creates intentions, ideas, goals, standards that may be beyond a human’s being ability.

Ideal Male Images

In the first article, it has clearly stated the misconceptions of the ideal male body image seen through action toys and the medical disorders it can cause to a male or female human being. One of most common disorder that is affecting men is body dysmorphic disorder, which develops obessional preoccupations. This disorder causes a great dissatisfaction within a males mind, basically causing instability. After numerous investigation,it has been proven that males over time have become influenced by the action toys produced. "Most of the older figures possesed powers beyond those of a human being than the contemporary ones today,"according to the article, these non-human powers created a false and dangerous hope to fans of the older figures. Figures of star wars such as Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo have acquired the physiques of body builders over the past 20 years; these figures are directly related to real-life human body builders. The authors of this article were clearly able to send their message to current and potential drilled-minded males who believe in these ideal cartoon figures.
In the second article, the author has insufficently expressed her points. Kim Franke-Folstad is defending these cartoon figures aganist any accusations made by critics. Franke-Folstad was not being realistic to her audience, she was directly detattaching the effects of the contemporary figures on males and females. She states," For years, I 've been defending Barbie aganist accusations that she promotes an unrealistic bod image for little girls." Kim uses this statement as her introduction paragraph which makes her stance obvious.
Cultural expectations for females in the United States has become more competitive over the years due to the creations of new fashion and beauty standards. Ads,television programs, and peer pressure have contributed one way or the other to the dissatisfaction of young women.
As a child I never had a favorite toy or cartoon figure, I was never influenced as a child by any of their physiques.

Paraphrasing Practice

James D lexter suggests that since 10% of student's final research paper comes from numerous amounts of qoutations, students should narrow down the number of exact transcribing of source materials when composing a draft.

Will there be a rapid solution?

Pro-ana websites and blogs should be shut down because it is very dangerous in many different aspects. They can be a negative influence to other young women who are seeking help and comfort at the same time. The Pro-ana community is in need for help and support by people who can make a positive impact in their life. If these websites increase, more anorexic women will tend to continue in their path of slowly dying, this is another way of committing suicide. Claire is a victim of a bulimic friend who was the reason for her to be introduced to this kind of lifestyle and long term suffering. Statistics show that about one in 200 American women suffer from anorexia and two or three in 100 suffer from bulimia; the number will increase if these websites are not shut down. The community will want to grow because these victims are feeling depressed and insecure.
The websites should continue to exist because anorexic women should be able to find other similar women who are going through the same stage of life. Bulimic and anorexic women are finding comfort and happiness once they know that hundreds of other women are taking the same steps as they are. The anorexic women should be able to express their feelings freely without anything or anyone getting in their way. Family, friends, and counselors are the last resort these young women should go to, simply because they will communicate their ideas in a pathetic way. By keeping these websites, you are creating hope the society that one day these victims or “pro-ana” women will realize their mistake and find a rapid remedy.
There has to be some organization such as the National Eating Disorder Association in our community that will monitor these websites. By viewing what these young women communicate to the world and themselves, people in the health professions can possibly find solutions and decrease any potential prospects that might fall in the trap and long-term suffering and depression. This is major issue that world should continue to open their eyes to.

Is it humiliating or not? blog # 2

This ad indeed was shocking and humiliating in many different aspects. The elements that revealed my initial feeling or impression was the usage of the words. I felt that each of the lines in the ad implied something negative.
I am not a runner, but I definitely think that those who run as a hobby will take this ad in consideration. There is a possibility that these runners might feel the responsibility of actually finding criminals and possible murderers. This ad might have a negative impact on the runners because it’s humiliating and might take away the interest and love for running.
The position of the man in the ad definitely implies that he is all set to start his “mission” of finding dead bodies. The big emphasis on the shoes generated a feeling inside of me that unless you buy those pair of shoes, you are useless to the society. The last line of ad “So do your civic duty and run like an animal” blew my mind away. It was very strong, degrading, and shocking to read. A person should never be compared to animal in any respect or form.
Pearl Izumi does not alienate the running population from the jogging population. I came to this conclusion by analyzing his words, images and intentions. It may or may not be true that runners and joggers are the ones who discover the dead, but that does not give the right to the creator of this ad to belittle them.
The pathos appeal was the strongest to me, not everything in the ad I found to be credible. I had mixed feelings about this advertisement.
If I were to choose which advertisement should be magazines, I would pick Pearl Izumi’s ad because I feel it was very strong, direct, and effective.

fallacies about doctors...

Doctors are the only professionals that can be sympathic with other humans, they are very understanding and caring.
